6 Time Saving Tips for Busy Mommy Mornings
6 Time Saving Tips for Busy Mommy Mornings
Mornings. They set the tone for your entire day. And that’s not always necessarily a good thing…
Do you ever have those mornings where you get up with plenty of time to spare? You have some peaceful time to yourself, the kids get up and are in a great mood, and everything just goes smoothly? I’m guessing not often enough, right? My mornings usually consisted of sleeping until I heard one of the kids calling for me and then rushing around trying to get everyone up, diapers changed, and breakfast made. It was chaos.
On the occasions where everything happened to fall into place, my whole day went better! So I searched high and low for some of the best tips to have a more productive and less stressful morning routine. I started trying them out to see what worked and made things better for my crazy busy mommy mornings!
1. Get prepared the night before
If you wake up and don’t have to worry about picking out clothes for everyone and what everyone is going to eat for breakfast, it makes your morning go a lot smoother. If I know I have somewhere to go the next day, then I try to get my clothes and shoes ready and do the same thing for the kids. I get the diaper bag out and fully loaded up with diapers, wipes, and extra outfits (just in case) and set up the snack cups and milk cups so that everything is ready to go. It is always a struggle trying to get us up and out of the house as it is. Not having to try to remember if I’ve packed everything up last minute is always super helpful!
I’ve also found that when I use a planner to set up meals for the week, it helps out with some of that last minute ‘what do I feed the kids’ drama. I honestly had been using a meal planner just to plan my dinners for the week, but once I started using it to plan out all 3 meals, it helped out sooo much with daily meals and with my grocery shopping list too!
2. Have a morning routine that you look forward to
This does NOT have to be anything too involved. I cannot stress to you how much I am NOT a morning person. I normally stay up until around midnight every night. My favorite thing to do after the kids go to bed is to lie in my bed and watch Netflix. I love it. I look forward to it after all of my chores for the day are done. So why not have something that you look forward to each morning?
For me, I like to get up before the kids, make up my bed, come into the living room and sit down with an iced coffee and my laptop. Whether I’m working on my blog, checking emails, or doing homework, (since I’m also in online classes) it’s what works for me. I take the baby monitors in with me and I just work on whatever I can until I start to see them stir. That allows me to fit in some productive time in my morning that is just for me, so that once they get up, it can be all about them. I can get their food ready for them before I get them up and then it’s go-go-go with them.
Create a Morning Routine That Works for You
Your morning routine can be anything you need it to be. What is going to give you a peaceful feeling to get your day started off on the right foot?
Getting up and meditating first thing?
Getting your blood flowing with a morning yoga routine?
Reading your Bible and having a morning devotional to feed your spirit?
Getting your goals and plans lined up for the day?
Find whatever it is that’s going to be beneficial for you and make your morning feel productive and your day run smoother. Make it work for you.
3. Get out your planner and see what you have on the agenda today
I always feel better when I have a clear picture of what I need to get done that day. It lets me set my day up in a way that best works for me. Even as a stay at home mom where every day is set up mostly the same, you always have those days where things are a little different. Doctor’s appointments, playdates, or something special can change your entire layout for the day. Knowing what you need to do can really help set your course in the right direction.
I figure out any errands that we need to run, places we need to go, and calls I need to make. I find that having a routine that I can mostly stick to and knowing what to expect just saves me time in the morning…and all day for that matter!
4. Ignore your phone until you’re up and out of bed
This one tip, right here, could change everything. If you’re anything like me, you can wake up, reach for the phone, and then fall into a social media black hole. I might grab my phone just to check my new emails, but then I’ll see a great email I’ve received. That gets me to hop over and check out a new blog post and then somehow end up scrolling through Facebook. And if I end up making it to Pinterest then it’s all over!! I can seriously lose time on Pinterest! I can start out looking for one little thing and can come out of my Pinterest haze hours later with new DIY ideas and organizational tips! It’s amazing! But if I make it a conscious decision to NOT mess with my phone at all until I’ve got all my morning ducks in a row, then it’s a huge time saver.
I bought an iPhone alarm clock/charger that is set up across the room. When my alarm goes off in the morning, I have to get out of bed to turn it off. I am a lot less likely to spend half an hour scrolling through social media when it’s not right by my bed and it’s the first thing I reach for when I’m still in my warm, comfy bed.
5. Time Your Showers
I am notorious for my suuuper long baths and showers. It’s my favorite ‘me time’ activity for relaxing. There is something about that hot water beating down on my back muscles that is so ridiculously soothing. I could spend an hour just standing there. Lost in thought. Relaxing. But obviously, I don’t have that luxury with my littles waking up and ready to start their days! Whether you’re feeling super rested from a full night’s sleep, or, like in my case, feeling pretty tired from a night of getting up with a teething baby or soothing my toddler after a bad dream, a shower can work magic.
You can buy a shower timer to keep yourself on track so you know how long you’re in for. You get the added bonus of getting a reminder when you need to get out. What I like to do is put on some music while I’m in there and give myself a song limit. Songs are around 3-4 minutes long each. So I get the added benefit of hearing some of my favorite music, which helps me to get motivated and wake up, and it keeps me on track of how long I’m spending in there. I just put it the song I’m in the mood for on YouTube or Pandora and I’m good to go since it keeps playing similar songs! I normally give myself 4 or 5 songs if I have time to spare. But if I’m in bit more of a hurry, then I’ll normally try to aim for 2 or 3. Plus – music helps put you in an awesome mood too!
6. Put a clock in your bathroom
This one is a must for me! I’m totally addicted to clocks. I’m not big on wearing watches but I love knowing what time it is! All. The. Time. I like to know exactly what time the baby took his nap, or what time the kids had their lunch. All of my clocks are synced to the minute so it keeps me on track. And I have clocks in every room! I have a little clock that came with an Oral-B toothbrush sitting on my countertop in my bathroom that I can see while I’m getting ready. It makes SUCH a difference!

If you know that you need to leave the house in a certain amount of time, don’t you need to know what time it is while you’re getting ready? Of course! I could never go back to not having a clock in the bathroom. If you get one to try, I promise you, you’ll never go back! A digital clock that shows the exact minute is the best for keeping track!
Try It Out For 2 Weeks
Whether you’ve got to get up for work, to get the kids to school, or just get the little ones up to get your day started, these tips will help! Try waking up earlier and see how it makes you feel. It normally takes around 2 weeks for your body to get used to the new routine of waking up earlier. Try it out for a few weeks to get your mornings organized and see if it helps your days go smoother!
I hope these 6 time saving tips for busy mommy mornings help you to feel more productive and less stressed! Do you have any other tips for making mornings go smoother? I’d love to hear them!
